Our November Newsletter: Getting Out of the Way

Our friend Tracey Corder often talks about getting out of the way: “We have fought so hard to break down barriers that it’s almost difficult for us to see a time when we need to give up our seats — but there are times when that’s [necessary].”

So many of us are challenging oppression while enduring the compounding cycles of oppression, making it seem almost unreasonable that we ever move out of the way. But when we reach the table, any table — at a convening, during a community meeting, or in city hall — let’s all be like Tracey and ask ourselves: Who is not here? Do I need to give up my seat?

Tomorrow’s #GivingTuesday, and we’ve decided to get out of the way this year. Read our blog post on why we’re opting out tomorrow. Tl;dr: It’s got a lot to do with white supremacy and the nonprofit industrial complex.

As a national movement-support organization, we always want to make space for local organizations of color, so tomorrow we’ll be elevating their online campaigns on Twitter. Check out our page throughout the day and give what you can.
